The Wisconsin Conference trip to Alabama sites that played key roles in the Civil Rights movement will take place from Sunday, Feb. 1, through Friday, Feb. 6. Participants will travel by bus (assuming a minimum of 30 participants) and visit sites including Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church in Montgomery, the Edmund Pettus Bridge and Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church in Selma, and the 16th Avenue Baptist Church in Birmingham. Total cost of the trip is estimated to be $1,200 for each participant (estimated $375 additional for single occupancy). Depart Feb. 1 at 8 AM drive to Cape Girardeau, Missouri (7 hours) — dinner and overnight.
Feb. 2. Depart at 8 AM and drive 2.5 hours to Memphis (arrive at 10:45). Visit/tour & lunch then travel to Birmingham (which is 3.5 hours) departing at 1:45 and arriving at 5:15 for dinner and overnight in Birmingham.
Feb. 3. Birmingham civil rights walking tour (8:00 to 11:30 AM) including Kelly Ingram Park, 16th street Baptist church, and the Civil rights institute. Lunch, then depart for Selma at 12:30, arriving around 2:15 to see (and walk) the Edmond Pettis Bridge and drive by the Brown Chapel AME church. Then head to Montgomery (1 hour). The Lowndes Interpretive Center is on the way between Selma and Montgomery (and is free but closes at 4:30 PM). Dinner and overnight in Montgomery.
Feb. 4. Montgomery morning tour – Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church and Rosa Park memorial. Then head to the Legacy Museum (sounds like a good café for lunch) and Lynching Memorial (National Memorial for Peace and Justice) and drive by the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park. Dinner and another overnight in Montgomery.
Feb. 5. Head north to Louisville area (7 hours). Dinner and overnight.
Feb. 6. Head back to Oconomowoc (7 hours).
